I recently lost my last living grandparent, Carol Gruel.  She was an extraordinary person.  Grandma Carol had much influence on my life, especially the early years.  She was our caretaker while our parents were at work.  The memories I share along with my sisters will always be treasured.   Endless hours of cards, lifetime movies, soap operas, puzzles, drawings, crossword puzzles and jewelry shopping all stand out. 

Grandma Carol was as smart as they came.  Her ability to remember names and faces were unmatched.  The first time she met my husband Mark, she was able to tie together that his mother Mae was my moms assistant teacher in Kindergarten! An expert level crossword puzzle and a grammar queen she was.  Thank you grandma for teaching me early on aints not a word and to avoid those double negatives! 

She also had a heck of a sense of humor! She laughed often and found the humor in many things.  Later in her life, she even indulged in the Kardashions. She got a kick out of Kim! 

Losing a grandparent is hard.  It’s even harder for her daughters, my mom and Aunt Suzy.  My Grandma loved her girls very much.  Hugs to you both Susan Agee & Linda Molinaro. 

I appreciate your condolences.  My grandma would think this was a nice gesture but be really thinking, April, you missed a comma and that was spelled wrong! She would also be thinking, don’t forget to tell them I was known as Legs in college for my long model like legs! 😀 That’s what we love about our grandmas.  Cheers and Hugs to all of the grandmas out there.  You make life better.

My entire life is flooded with memories of her. My earliest memories, she was there. She was always there. The simplest days of playing gin rummy, walks on the boardwalk, watching soap operas (All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hosipital) so many sleepovers where I was allowed to have an entire can of cheese balls and an orange soda. She was graduate of the University Of Michigan, she went on to become a teacher. I would play teacher in her basement with all the boxes she had kept of her curriculum. She LOVED jewelry and dressing up with it was always a favorite past time of mine. Marbles come to mind. Always fascinated with the different colors and unique designs of them. So many buttons, shapes and sizes, colors…it’s these simple memories that make me smile. She loved to put “spit curls” in my hair (don’t ask) before school pictures and I still loved her!!

I loved just sitting with her and asking about her life, about the fashions she grew up with, her childhood and passions. Her favorite eras (she lived through many) I loved to hear about my ancestry. Her memory was impeccable to the end. 

I always felt her love. I felt it unconditionally and we always remember how a person makes/made us feel. She made me feel special. She made me confident and strong. She will be with me forever. 

I love you, Grandma!!! I will miss you ALWAYS 💔
